5 Ways to Stick to Your New Year's Resolution

We’ve all done it. Made a list of all the things we’d like to change about ourselves in the New Year, but didn’t stick to it. We start off optimistic, but slowly the steam behind our motivation slows down and we fall back into our old habits, and promise ourselves that next year we will be better. But there must be a way to keep the promises to yourself, right? Fortunately, there is a way!

Check out these 5 tips to help achieve ALL your New Year’s Resolutions!

1. One Thing at a Time

The biggest vice to your motivation is trying to tackle all of your goals at once. While it may work for some, completely overhauling your life is intimidating and stressful. Instead, pick one goal to work towards. Focusing on one goal helps you dedicate your energy and attention to doing the best job you can without being torn in different directions.

2. Make Small Adjustments

While you pick your goal to work towards, divide it into easier chunks that can be tackled. For example, if your goal is to be healthier, start to make changes to either your diet or increasing your exercise. By dividing your goal, it’ll be easier to swallow the new lifestyle.

3. Ask for Help

Support groups exist for a reason. It’s easier to accomplish your goals if you are going through the same trials and tribulations as others. Look into classes offered in your community. Public libraries offer a wide range of free classes ranging from technology to cooking. Talk about your goals to your friends and family to make you more accountable for your actions. Partner with a buddy that has the same resolution as you to keep your motivation!

4. Get Back on the Horse

Sometimes failure is inevitable. Life can get the best of us and our everyday stress can creep into our minds. That small voice might whisper, “don’t go to the gym,” but don’t let it get the best of you!  Acknowledge that you had an off day or off week, and get back on that horse…or wagon! If you have a setback, don’t beat yourself up over it. Just keep pushing forward.

5. Celebrate Small Wins

Accomplishments are meant to be celebrated! Just like receiving your diploma at graduation, don’t be afraid to celebrate your small victories. If you’re used to rewarding yourself with your favorite meal or drink, instead take some time for yourself to relax. Go to your favorite park, beach, buy yourself something nice, or pamper yourself with a massage or manicure. This will keep you on track and feeling great!
